Bristow Welcomes the New Sikorsky S-76D to its Fleet

January 29, 2014

The latest version of the renowned Sikorsky S-76 helicopter joined the Bristow fleet in December. As the S-76D integrates into Bristow’s global flight operations, passengers will be able to enjoy and take advantage of its faster cruise speed, increased range, more-efficient fuel burn and quieter cabin.

Bristow took delivery of the first fully configured Sikorsky S-76D helicopter in December 2013, continuing a 40-year relationship with the manufacturer and bringing the latest advances in offshore helicopter transportation to its clients.

The S-76D offers improved power and performance by using all-composite main rotor blades and Pratt & Whitney PW210S engines to offer a maximum cruise speed of about 155 knots and a maximum range of more than 440 nautical miles. Dual Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems continuously monitor critical engine functions.

“The S-76 has enjoyed a strong reputation,” says Bristow Director of Fleet Management Nina Jonsson. “We look forward to the S-76D becoming a solid participant in our fleet and providing increased value to our clients.”

Bristow agreed last year to acquire as many as 26 S-76D aircraft.

Quieter, inside and out

The S-76D features a new quiet tail rotor with four enhanced flaw-tolerant, flexbeam composite rotor blades that reduce the external acoustic signature. Additional improvements reduce noise in the cabin to provide a quieter, more comfortable ride for the S-76D’s 12 passengers.

Other features of the S-76D include:

  • Advanced Thales TopDeck® integrated avionics system
  • Four-axis autopilot
  • Rotor ice protection system for all-weather capabilities (optional)
  • Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) incorporated into fleet monitoring and analysis
  • Active vibration control
  • Enhanced ground proximity warning system
  • Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS1)
  • QUIETZONE® main transmission

Bristow President and CEO Bill Chiles commented on the arrival of the S-76D, saying, “We are committed to providing the safest, most reliable and efficient service to our clients, and our S-76 aircraft have done just that by consistently performing a demanding and intensive offshore oil and gas transportation mission on an aggressive schedule. We look forward to putting the new S-76D, with its enhanced capabilities, into our operations around the world.”
