Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter Teams Honoured at Esteemed Awards Ceremony

October 27, 2017

HM Coastguard Search and Rescue (SAR) Helicopters SAR teams in Inverness and Humberside have been recognised by the Honourable Company of Air Pilots for their outstanding courage and devotion to duty across land and sea.

Crews at both HM Coastguard SAR bases, operated by Bristow Helicopters, received esteemed Prince Phillip Helicopter Rescue award and attended the ceremony in Guildhall, central London to receive the honour.

The helicopter crew of Rescue 912 at HM Coastguard Humberside was commended for the successful rescue of a fallen hill walker in Langdale Fell, located in the Lake District. Working closely with the Air Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC), the team utilised its extensive skills and experience to rescue the walker in extremely challenging weather conditions and safely transported the casualty to Royal Preston Major Trauma Centre for treatment.

Captain Peter McKenzie-Brown, HM Coastguard Helicopters Humberside, commented: “Recognition of the work carried out by search and rescue crews around the country is always fantastic to see. This particular call-out was one of the most challenging, given the location and harsh weather conditions. The team worked tirelessly to ensure the safe and quick return of the stranded hillwalker and we are humbled that they have been commended for their efforts.”

The crew of rescue helicopter 195 at HM Coastguard Inverness was also recognised at the ceremony, attended by around 600 industry peers. The team was acknowledged for the rescue of two climbers avalanched on Creag Meagaidh mountain, located in the Scottish Highlands.

The crew quickly recognised the potentially time critical situation of the incident and worked closely with the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team to locate the casualties. Overcoming difficult snow conditions, the team used calm and calculated decision making to rescue the pair and attend to the critical individual.

Captain Simon Tye, HM Coastguard Helicopters Inverness, commented: “We were honoured to be presented with such a prestigious award. We are only one part of the team that create the UK SAR framework and we could not have achieved this rescue without the work of the local mountain rescue teams and Police Scotland.”

The Honourable Company of Air Pilots hosts the annual trophies and awards banquet to celebrate and recognise commendable achievements in aviation and outstanding performance by individuals or organisations.

The Humberside and Inverness SAR bases have conducted a total of more than 900 SAR operations in 2017 and are home to four state-of-the-art SAR helicopters, operated by Bristow Helicopters Ltd crew and support team.

The bases became fully operational in 2015 when Bristow Helicopters Ltd took over delivery of helicopter SAR services throughout the UK on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
